Common PrEP interaction questions
Can I take ibuprofen or other NSAIDs with PrEP?
On Truvada (TDF), NSAIDs add kidney strain — occasional use is usually fine, but regular use should be monitored, and acetaminophen (Tylenol) is preferred. On Descovy and Apretude, NSAIDs are safe. Search your exact NSAID in the tool.
Which drugs make PrEP fail?
Strong enzyme inducers: rifampin/rifapentine (TB), carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, oxcarbazepine (seizures) and St. John’s Wort. These can drop PrEP below protective levels — several are outright prohibited, especially with the injectables and TAF.
Do hormones, birth control or Viagra interact with PrEP?
No significant interaction. Gender-affirming hormones, contraceptives and PDE5 inhibitors (Viagra/Cialis) are all safe with PrEP. (Never mix PDE5 inhibitors with nitrates or poppers — that risk is independent of PrEP.)
