Country-by-country notes
- ๐บ๐ธ United States โ generic Truvada, Descovy, the Apretude injection (2021) and twice-yearly lenacapavir (Yeztugo, 2025) are all approved. PrEP has a USPSTF "Grade A" rating, so insurers and Medicaid cover it โ and its lab visits โ at no cost; assistance programs help the uninsured.
- ๐ฌ๐ง United Kingdom โ PrEP is free on the NHS (mostly generic TDF/FTC) via sexual-health clinics in all four nations. The cabotegravir injection has been authorised and NHS-funded; the 6-monthly lenacapavir is not yet MHRA-approved.
- ๐ฆ๐บ Australia โ generic tenofovir/emtricitabine has been on the PBS since April 2018, so eligible people pay only the standard co-payment. Injectable options are rolling out through review.
- ๐จ๐ฆ Canada โ PrEP is approved and common, but coverage varies by province/territory and private plans; cabotegravir is approved, lenacapavir is under review.
- ๐ซ๐ท France & EU โ France fully reimburses PrEP and, in 2026, added the cabotegravir injection โ a first for long-acting injectable PrEP in France/Europe. The EU approved lenacapavir (brand Yeytuo) in 2025.
- ๐ง๐ท Brazil โ PrEP is free through the public health system (SUS) since 2017 for people at higher risk; long-acting options are being evaluated.
- ๐ฒ๐ฝ Mexico & ๐ฎ๐ณ India โ access is growing. India manufactures much of the world's generic PrEP; public-sector access in both countries is expanding, and Gilead has licensed generic lenacapavir for many low- and middle-income countries.
