Is it 100%?No prevention is — but this is close
★ Feature · when it starts working

⏱️ When does PrEP start working?

PrEP isn't instant — it needs a few days to build protective levels in the body. On daily pills:

7
~7 days — anal sexDaily Truvada/Descovy reaches full protection for receptive anal sex.
20
~20 days — vaginal sex & injectionFront-hole/vaginal tissue takes longer to reach protective levels.
⏱️ Use condoms until PrEP is fully active. Injections and on-demand 2-1-1 have their own timing — your provider will explain. See full time-to-protection detail.
★ Feature · what changes the odds

Why adherence is everything

The ~99% figure assumes you take PrEP as prescribed. In studies where people didn't take it consistently, protection was much lower — not because the drug failed, but because it wasn't in the body when needed.
