Missed a PrEP dose? Here's exactly what to do

First, don't panic — PrEP is forgiving, and one missed pill rarely leaves you exposed. What to do depends on which PrEP you're on. Find your situation below.

Missed PrEP dose — FAQ

Am I still protected after one missed pill?

Almost certainly, especially for anal sex where 4+ doses a week is protective. Just resume daily dosing.

How many pills a week do I actually need?

Anal sex: 4+ a week. Vaginal sex: near-daily (~6–7). Don't rely on lower for vaginal exposure.

I stopped PrEP a while ago and want to restart — how?

Get an HIV test first, then restart daily; you're protected again after ~7 days (anal) / ~20 days (vaginal). Your provider can guide restart.

Does missing doses cause resistance?

Resistance is mainly a risk if you take PrEP while already having undiagnosed HIV — which is why testing before (re)starting matters. Occasional missed doses in an HIV-negative person don't cause resistance.

Tired of remembering a daily pill?

Injectable PrEP protects for 2 or 6 months at a time. See how the options compare.
