PrEP for women: what's different, and what works

Women are the most under-served group in HIV prevention โ€” often not offered PrEP even when they'd benefit. The science is clear and simple: PrEP works for women, but the option you choose and the time to protection are different from what men are told. Here's exactly what you need.

The one thing to know first

Not every PrEP option is approved for vaginal sex, and daily pills take longer to protect vaginal tissue. Get these two facts right and the rest is easy.

โœ… Approved for you: daily Truvada, the Apretude injection (every 2 months), and lenacapavir (twice a year).
๐Ÿšซ Not for vaginal sex: Descovy and on-demand "2-1-1" dosing were not studied for it โ€” don't rely on them.

โฑ๏ธ Protection takes ~20 days on daily pills for vaginal/cervical tissue (vs ~7 days for anal sex), because the drug reaches those tissues more slowly. Take it every day during that window and use condoms until you're covered โ€” or choose an injectable, which sidesteps daily adherence.

PrEP for women โ€” FAQ

Can women really take PrEP?

Yes โ€” Truvada, Apretude and lenacapavir are all approved for vaginal exposure. Women are simply offered PrEP less often, not because it doesn't work.

Why does it take longer to protect me than a man?

The active drug builds up more slowly in vaginal and cervical tissue โ€” about 20 days on daily pills, versus ~7 days for rectal tissue. That's why daily consistency (or an injectable) matters more for women.

Is it safe if I'm pregnant or want to get pregnant?

Yes. PrEP is recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding when there's ongoing HIV risk, and it's used when trying to conceive with a partner who has HIV โ€” see our couples guide.

Will PrEP mess with my birth control?

No. There's no interaction, and PrEP doesn't reduce contraceptive effectiveness. It also doesn't prevent pregnancy or other STIs.
