Lifestyle ยท straight answer

PrEP and alcohol: is it safe to drink?

Short answer: yes. Alcohol doesn't interact with PrEP and doesn't make it less effective โ€” you can drink and stay protected. The things actually worth knowing are about missed doses and heavy drinking, not the pill itself.

How to drink safely on PrEP

What about your liver, and mixing with other things?

PrEP is not primarily hard on the liver, and moderate drinking isn't a specific PrEP problem. If you have hepatitis B or C, or drink heavily, tell your provider โ€” they'll keep an eye on liver and kidney tests. Mixing alcohol with other drugs (chemsex, GHB, stimulants) is a bigger risk to adherence and safety than to PrEP itself โ€” check anything you take in our interaction checker, and be honest with your provider (it won't affect your access).

PrEP & alcohol โ€” FAQ

Can I drink the same day I take PrEP?

Yes. There's no need to separate them. Just don't let drinking cause you to skip the dose.

Will one heavy night ruin my protection?

No โ€” if you took your doses, you're protected. Rehydrate, and if you vomited within ~2 hours of a pill, take another.

Is beer/wine/spirits any different?

No โ€” it's the total alcohol and hydration that matter, not the type of drink.

What if drinking makes me forget PrEP a lot?

Consider an injection (every 2 or 6 months) so protection doesn't depend on a daily pill. Ask your provider.

Check anything else you take with PrEP

Alcohol is fine โ€” but confirm your other medicines, supplements and recreational drugs in seconds.
