Truvada vs Descovy — FAQ

Are they equally effective?

Yes, for anal sex both are about 99% effective when taken as prescribed. The differences are about side effects, approvals and cost — not protection.

Why is Descovy not for women?

It wasn't studied for vaginal exposure, so it isn't approved for it. Women should use Truvada, Apretude or lenacapavir.

Does Descovy cause weight gain?

It's associated with a modest gain (about 1–3 kg on average) and small lipid changes, whereas Truvada is weight-neutral.

Should I switch?

Consider it for kidney/bone concerns or tenofovir side effects (with anal exposure). Otherwise generic Truvada is a solid, cheaper choice — decide with your provider.
